Remember when marketing meant looking up?

Remember when marketing meant looking up?

Remember when marketing meant looking up?

You drove down the street and saw a massive billboard. You sat in a living room and watched a 30-second spot on TV. You opened a magazine and saw a glossy ad.

The strategy back then was simple, get people to look up.

It worked because attention was a limited resource. You had to interrupt people to get their eyes. You had to shout louder than the next guy.

That era is over.

We stopped looking up, and we stopped looking at screens that weren’t ours. We have stopped believing people who have the largest platforms or even the people in long standing senior positions.

Today, we don’t look up:

  • We look into our pockets
  • We look into our feeds
  • We look at the people we already follow, the creators we already trust, the voices that feel like friends

If your brand is still trying to make us look up, you are invisible.

The Shift from 'Interruption' to 'Immersion'

For decades, marketing was about interruption, and in essence it still is. You had to stop what someone was doing to see your message, that came in the form predominantly of TV advertising.

That stopped working when we got smartphones, now, we are in a state of continuous immersion.

We don’t watch ads - we scroll

We don’t read magazines - we skim

We don’t listen to radio - we listen to podcasts while driving.or pay for subscription to not have the interruption

Our brains are no longer wired to accept interruptions, they are wired to accept continuity.

We want content that flows naturally into what we are already doing.

We want to see a product being used by someone who looks like us, talks like us, and thinks like us.

We don’t want to be sold to, we want to be introduced.

Why the Phone is Our New Window to the World

How have we become so obsessed with our phones? Is it addiction? or is it recognition?

We use our phones to see the world through the eyes of other people.

When you see a creator talking about a problem you have, you don’t see a pitch, you see a solution.

When you see a creator using your brand, you don’t see a logo, it's social proof.

The phone isn’t just a device, it’s our filter. It filters out everything that feels fake, corporate, or forced, and only lets through what feels real.

And that’s where the problem lies for most businesses.

You are still trying to sell through a filter that rejects you.

The Influencer is No Longer Optional

In the past, an influencer was a tactic, the way to get more likes. Whereas today, the influencer is the primary means of visibility.

Why? Because they are the bridge.

They are the familiar person in a world that is becoming increasingly (strange/unfamiliar). They are the human face of your brand that doesn’t feel like a brand at all.

When an influencer talks about your product, they aren’t saying 'You need to buy this'. They are saying, 'I tried this, it works, and here's why'. That is the only marketing message that still works, because it's like a friend telling you about a film, book or restaurant recommendation.

Visibility Requires Familiarity

If you want your brand to be seen, it's pointless you being the one talking about it. 'Who are you'?

Like the job market, it's better if you're referred. You are instantly given additional credibility by someone who knows you. You have to be the one introduced, you need to become the product in the creator’s hand.

You want to become the solution in their story, the recommendation in their feed.

If you're serious about marketing and promoting your business, then you have to STOP trying to get people to look up. Instead mak your business part of the view.

The Future is See Through

The future of marketing isn’t about reach, it’s about resonance.

It’s not about how many eyes see your logo. It’s about how many hearts believe in the person conveying the message that holds your logo.

  1. If you are still building billboards, you are building for a world that no longer exists.
  2. If you are still buying ad space on platforms you don’t control, you are renting attention that expires the moment you stop paying.

The only visibility that lasts is the kind that feels familiar, the kind that feels like a friend. Visibility is what lives in the feed you are already scrolling.

Allow Your Business to Start Being Seen

If you want your brand to be visible moving forward, you need to stop trying to be the star.

You need to become the supporting character in someone else’s story.

You need to find the people that your customers are already following, and can't get enough of.

You need to let them speak for you, because in a world where no one looks up, the only way to be seen is to be seen through.
